How To Get Rid of Puffy Eyes?

Puffy eyes can be especially challenging, especially when you have an important business or social meeting and you want to look your best, and puffiness develops around your eyes.  Those eye bags can be tough to manage.

Causes of Puffy Eyes

When you wake up to puffy eyes, you probably failed to get a sufficient number of hours of restful sleep or, you may have overslept.  Any disruption in your regular sleeping habits may have caused your eyes to puff.

Another possibility is that you may have slept in the wrong position.  Sleeping on your sides will almost always cause one or both eyes to become puffy because blood and other fluids fail to get circulated more effectively and become trapped beneath the skin surrounding your eyes.

Chronic stress can also be the cause of those puffed eyes, particularly if you've been working late, and have fixed your eyes on your office desktop continuously for hours.  Stress caused by worrying and anxiety may also be causing you to overeat, particularly on salty foods which promotes fluid retention over your eyes.

You are likely to not get a good night's rest too if you have been anxious about perhaps some uncertainties in your job or personal relationships.

Lack of exercise may be affecting your body's ability to properly circulate your blood, and the nutrients and oxygen along with it.  The tendency is for fluids to be trapped underneath the skin surrounding your eyes, causing the skin to bulge.

The natural course of ageing is also a major cause of eye puffiness.  Ageing causes skin around the eyes to sag, metabolism and blood circulation to slow down causing build up around your eyes, and fat storage around your eyes to be higher causing skin around your eyes to thicken.

If you have been drinking and smoking, chances are these could very well be the culprits.

Puffy Eyes Treatments And Home Remedies

Some quick solutions to eye puffiness that you can try at home especially when you need to look your best in the shortest possible amount of time are suggested below.

Apply juice of lemon or citrus with beaten egg

Your eye bags may be caused by Vitamin C or iron deficiency.  The juice of lemon or citrus makes up for your deficiency of Vitamin C, the egg yolk is rich in iron, while the egg white will help tighten the skin.  Apply these around your eyes and keep on for 15 minute before washing your face.

Apply cold compress

Wrap one or two cubes of ice into a towel and apply on your eyes.  You may prefer using a facial mask that has been frozen.  Keep the cold compress on for as long as you can.  The cold compress works by constricting blood vessels and thus, reducing the bulge.

Use essential oils

Almond oil and rose water or rose oil are commercially available from organic beauty bars.  These essential oils have anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce swelling thus, improving the appearance of your puffed eyes.  For best results, apply after washing your face before bedtime.

Consider getting a surgery

If you are in your 40s, there is a big chance that your age may be causing your eyes to become puffy.  If you've had puffy eyes for some time, the puffiness is extreme, and you are bothered by them, consider getting a more permanent solution like surgery.  Arrange an appointment with your doctor to obtain a professional's opinion and make sure you know what you are getting yourself into.  If your puffy eyes do not severely bother you then, just leave them as they are and settle for more natural solutions to improve their appearance.  Keep in mind that any medical interventions, surgery most especially, will have some risks involved.

In many cases, puffy eyes are simply a cosmetic problem, nothing more.  If they do not bother you, you do not need to consider medical interventions.  However, if you've had them for a while or, if they suddenly appeared and you know you don't usually get puffy eyes, it will be smart to visit your doctor.  You will want to make sure that your puffy eyes are not a sign of more complicated medical conditions like chronic diseases and infections.
